Thomas M. Gorrie

Thomas GorrieTom Gorrie received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University and his master's and doctoral degrees in chemistry from Princeton University.  He completed post-doctoral studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. 

Dr. Gorrie retired in 2008 from Johnson & Johnson as corporate vice president of government affairs and policy.  In that capacity, he was responsible for all federal, state, and international government affairs and policy.  He worked for the corporation for thirty-five years in a variety of roles in research and development, marketing and sales, business development, strategic planning, general management, international, venture capital, and health policy.

A strong advocate for Duke University, Dr. Gorrie has been a committed volunteer for more than fifteen years.  He currently serves on the Medical Center's Board of Visitors and is chair of the Duke University Health System's Board of Directors.  He serves as a trustee emeritus of the Hun School of Princeton's Board of Trustees, is an adjunct professor at the Rutgers Business School, and is a trustee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. 

His previous board affiliations include the National Committee for U.S.-China Relations, the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment, the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Foundation Boards, Prosperity New Jersey, Rutgers Business School, Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation, Liberty Science Center, and St. Joseph's Hospital in Canada. 

Dr. Gorrie and his wife, Margaret, reside in Pennington, NJ.

Elected to the Board of Trustees in 2006, Dr. Gorrie chairs the Medical Center Academic Affairs Committee.  He is a member of the Executive Committee, the Committee on Trusteeship, and the Academic Affairs Committee, and also serves as chair of the Global Health Institute Board of Advisors.
