Keanu Valibia is a dual-Master’s candidate in Public Policy and Environmental Management at Duke University, where he has spent the past two years as the President of the Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG). Originally from Merced, California, he built a career spanning consulting, advertising, and nonprofit work before pivoting to sustainability policy, influenced by his brief experience in disaster relief with the International Organization for Migration. During his GPSG tenure, Keanu has worked alongside students, staff, and administrators to elevate student governance and advocate for stronger institutional policies while navigating complex world affairs. Under his team’s leadership, GPSG has expanded their state and federal engagement, informed Duke sustainability initiatives, and fostered relationships with stakeholders such as the graduate student union. As he reflects on his final semester, he remains committed to ensuring that Duke University continues to lead through thoughtful governance and principled decision-making.
Keanu applied for the Young Trustee position to deepen his commitment to the Duke University community. As President of GPSG, he gained practical experience in governance and a deeper insight into institutional decision-making, strengthening his understanding of how Duke operates at many levels. Through the collaboration and gracious support of students, staff, faculty, and administrators, he has felt the impact of strong leadership and strategic planning in shaping the university’s future. Keanu hopes to preserve and expand the opportunities that defined his Duke experience, ensuring that future generations of Blue Devils thrive in an environment of innovation and excellence.
