Ann Pelham

Ann Pelham has spent her career in journalism, working as a reporter and editor for more than 20 years and then in newspaper business operations. From 1998 to 2008, she served as publisher of Legal Times, a newspaper focused on law and lobbying in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Pelham received her Bachelor’s degree from Duke University in 1974.

Since 2004, Ann has been a member of the board of directors of Canal Insurance Company, a privately held property and casualty insurer focusing on the transportation sector.  She also serves as vice chair and trustee of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, as well as chair of the Audit & Finance Committee, and as chair of the Jean T. and Heyward G. Pelham Foundation.

She and her husband, Bob Cullen, live in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and have two adult children, Catherine Cullen, a 2006 Duke graduate, and Pete Cullen.

Elected to the Duke University Board of Trustees in 2014, Ms. Pelham serves on the Graduate and Professional Education and Research Committee, the Audit and Compliance Committee, and the Committee on Honorary Degrees.

Ms. Pelham was a member of the Duke Alumni Association board from 2004 to 2011, serving as president from 2008 to 2010 and, in that capacity, also served on the Duke University Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2011. She has served on the editorial advisory board for Duke Magazine, as vice president of the local Duke organization in Washington, D.C., as a co-chair of her three most recent reunions, and as a member of the Leadership Gifts Committee for Duke Forward. Ms. Pelham is also a former chair of the Duke Student Publishing Company, publisher of The Chronicle, where as a student Ann got her start in journalism and served as editor.
