The awarding of honorary degrees at Commencement is Duke University’s way of recognizing people who have exemplified in their work the highest ideals and standards to which the University is dedicated. By the awarding of honorary degrees, the University affirms its vital interest in and connection with excellence in all valued aspects of human endeavor.

We welcome nominations from any member of the Duke community. Nomination and endorsement letters should be addressed to the Committee on Honorary Degrees. Nominations are considered by the Committee on Honorary Degrees and recommendations made to the Academic Council, and then to the Board of Trustees, usually one full year preceding the presentation of the award.  Current Duke faculty, employees, and members of the Board of Trustees are not eligible to receive an honorary degree.

The most successful nominations are thorough and demonstrate the relationship between the nominee and the University and its endeavors.
