Fred Sutherland

Fred Sutherland served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of ARAMARK Corporation, a leading global provider of outsourcing services including food and facilities services, and uniform and career apparel services. With revenues of approximately $15 billion and 270,000 employees in 21 countries, ARAMARK has been consistently named one of “America’s Most Admired Companies” by Fortune Magazine. He retired in December 2015.

Mr. Sutherland received his undergraduate degree from Duke in 1973 in physics and mathematics. He also has an MBA from the Katz school of the University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Sutherland is a director of Consolidated Edison, and is chair of the Finance Committee. He is also a director and Audit Committee chair of Colliers International, a leading global commercial real estate services company, and a director and Audit Committee chair of Sterling Check Corporation, a leading provider of employee background screening. Mr. Sutherland is a director and past chair of WHYY, Philadelphia’s public broadcast affiliate, a trustee and past Board President of Episcopal Community Services, a Philadelphia-based anti-poverty agency, a trustee of the National Constitution Center, established by Congress as a non-partisan source of information about the U.S Constitution, and is a trustee and past Board President of People’s Light, a leading professional non-profit theater in the Philadelphia area.

Mr. Sutherland and his wife Barbara T’75 live in Haverford, PA. They have two sons, Matthew E’03 and Mark T’06.

At Duke, Mr. Sutherland served on the Trinity Board of Visitors, the Financial Aid Initiative Committee, the Duke Forward Campaign Steering Committee, and chaired the Duke Forward Leadership Development Committee. In 2015 he and his wife launched The Access and Opportunity financial aid challenge fund for Duke University.

Mr. Sutherland was elected to the Duke University Board of Trustees in 2017 and serves as vice chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee and on the Resources Committee.
